FIFA trip sets students on course

http://www.fifamaster.org/index.php?item=news&id=183

It has been a long year but now students of the FIFA Master are into the final stretch. And, as has become tradition, the scholars on the programme, in partnership with the CIES (International Center for Sports Studies), paid a visit to world football’s headquarters in Zurich on 4 April where they were treated to words from FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter and Director of International Relations Jerome Champagne to see them home.

Twenty-nine students – 16 men and 13 women – are two-thirds of the way through the 8th FIFA Master Edition. Currently housed at Neuchatel University (Switzerland) where they are studying legal aspects of the world of sport, they have already completed two terms: at De Montfort University in Leicester (UK), learning a humanities module and at the SDA Bocconi School of Management in Milan (Italy) where sports management is taught.

The class of 2007-2008, comprising 22 different nationalities from Peru to Nepal and from backgrounds ranging from engineering to law, grouped inside FIFA’s house where President Blatter expressed his hope that they would go on to instill the ideas and lessons they had learned onto a wider world.

“Sport is so important that we need professional managers. The only way to have that is by educating them” he said.

The students, some of whom will return to their native lands at the end of July to impart the knowledge they have picked up on the course, listened attentively about FIFA’s philosophy of promoting the local game, redistributing wealth among its associations, while standing up to the pressures of big business.

With the trip as a motivation for another two more months of hard work, the 29 students are in the perfect place to make a big impression on the world of football.

Last Monday (25th February), Leonardo Nascimento de Araujo, former Brazilian National player and World Cup winner, kindly accepted our invitation to lecture for the first time to the FIFA Master students on his current role as AC Milan's Tehnical Director and his views on the sports industry.

This two-hour session, extremely lively and informative, proved to be extremely beneficial. Not only Leonardo provided students with a different approach of the sports business, but this was also an excellent complement to the views exposed by many previous speakers from the sports industry.

The FIFA Master Alumni in the Press - Mico Petkovic (graduate 2007)

http://www.fifamaster.org/index.php?item=news&id=170

Having finished a Master, Mico Petkovic has become the most educated person in the Serbian sport

First Serbian Diplomat

A Director for legal affairs in the FA of Serbia has acquired MA in Management, Law and Humanities of Sport

Since this summer, Serbia has gained the most educated person in sport matters within its boundaries. A lawyer, Mico Petkovic, finished the one-year Master supported and financed by FIFA and IOC and organized by CIES (International Center for Sport Studies) based in Neuchatel (Switzerland).
Having finished it, he has acquired MA in Management, Law and Humanities of sport.
The Master consisted of three different modules. The first one was organized in Leicester (England) where Mr. Petkovic and other students were learning through practical experiences of Manchester United, West Ham, Bolton.
The second one was held in Milano where the learning process was backed up with field visits to AC Milan, FC Internazionale, Lega Calcio, Koverciano.
Finally, the third module was organized by University of Neuchatel where this group of students had direct cooperation with FIFA, UEFA and IOC dealing with different legal issues.
At the end of the Master, Mr.Petkovic presented a final project.

“Jaka Lucu from Slovenia, Mihai Tudoran from Romania, Victor Vasiliev from Russia and me presented the project entitled “Central-eastern European football league, dream or reality?”” Mr. Petkovic starts his story.
“Taking into consideration all the facts that we came up with, and making a comparison between the five big leagues in Europe, including the current opinion of UEFA, we have concluded that a regional Adriatic League is a very feasible and useful project for many reasons.
Once but not too long ago, the League had an extreme success and there are still a lot of people who remember the strength and quality of it”.

The diplomas were handed in Neuchatel by Lord Sebastian Kou, ex Olympics recorder and now president of Local Organising Committee for Olympic Games that will be held in 2012 in London.
Having successfully presented the final project, Mr. Petkovic has become the first Serb who finished the Master since it was founded. In addition, more than 200 people from all around the globe have finished it so far.

The FA and its President, Zvezdan Terzic, demonstrated their belief in the vision shared by all relative factors within the organization by helping Mr. Petkovic to continue his education.

“The FA was supporting me during the whole Master. Technically, by finishing it I am prepared to overtake the most complicated positions, not only in football, but also in other types of sport. However, at this point I am waiting for the offer of the FA. I look forward to starting with implementation of the acquired knowledge in the Serbian football as soon as possible.”-Mr. Petkovic explains.

The FA of Serbia should certainly know how to use Petkovic’s knowledge and experience attained during the Master by delegating him appropriate role in accordance with his potential. The reason is simple: Mico Petkovic is future of the Serbian football.

FIFA Master Graduation 2007

http://www.fifamaster.org/index.php?item=news&id=155

Lord Sebastian Coe, chairman of the London2012 Olympic Games Organising Committee, awards diplomas to the FIFA Master 7th edition graduates

On the 13th of July 2007, in Neuchâtel (Switzerland), graduates of the unique FIFA Master - International Master in Management, Law and Humanities of Sport, received their accolade from Lord Sebastian Coe in person.

Following a tradition of prestigious patrons (Sir Bobby Charlton in 2006, Alexander Popov in 2005, Sergeï Bubka in 2004, Michel Platini in 2003, etc.), Lord Sebastian Coe attended this year’s graduation ceremony as guest of honour and Patron of the 7th edition of the FIFA Master course.

In his athletics career as a middle distance runner, Lord Sebastian Coe won the 1500 m gold medal at the Olympic Games in 1980 and 1984, and set eight outdoor and three indoor world records. Following his retirement from athletics, he served as a Conservative Party Member of Parliament from 1992-97, and became a life peer in 2000. He was the head of the London bid to host the 2012 Summer Olympics and, after the International Olympic Committee announced London as the winning bid, became the chairman of the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games. Lord Sebastian Coe also wrote five books, which include Born to Run (co-written by David Miller), Comeback (co-written by David Miller), Running for Fitness (co-written by Peter Coe), The Olympians and More Than a Game.

The FIFA Master 7th edition consisted of 30 students, who came from more than 20 different nations from Ecuador to Serbia, and Sri Lanka to Sweden. They started their course at De Montfort University's International Centre for Sports History and Culture (ICSHC) last September and studied there until Christmas before trimesters in Italy and Switzerland.

On his personal blog, www.london-2012.co.uk/London-2012-blog, Lord Sebastian Coe quotes his visit to Neuchâtel: "Today I have been in Switzerland with Denis Oswald, Chair of the Coordination Commission, where I was Guest of Honour at the FIFA Masters Degree Ceremony […] This new and highly qualified group will be looking to take up posts in sports administration. They will be much better equipped than the generation before to deal with the growing global complexity of sport."

FIFA Master Alumni from the course are working for sports organisations such the IOC, FIFA, UEFA, Olympic Summer and Winter Games, CONMEBOL, AFC, the Football League, FIA, Fulham FC, FC Bayern Munich, Nike, T.E.A.M. Marketing AG, UCI, to quote but a few.

The "FIFA Master" is a one year postgraduate degree, created by FIFA in 2000, taught by three leading European universities (De Montfort University, Leicester, UK - SDA Bocconi School of Management, Milan, IT – Université de Neuchâtel, Neuchâtel, CH) and coordinated by CIES (International Centre for Sports Studies), an institution specialised in sport research and education based in Neuchâtel.

About the course, Jeff Hill, Director of De Montfort's ICSHC and former FIFA Master Board member, said: "The aim of the course is to cover all aspects of sports - historical, sociological, ethical, managerial and legal perspectives - providing the tools for sports executives - properly to manage the ever-expanding sport business […] Over 80 per cent of our graduates are directly applying their skills and competencies within sports institutions and at premier international sporting events around the world. The number of our graduates employed in top level sports organisations around the world shows just how distinctive and effective our course is."

FIFA Master Conference 2007 – Presentations of dissertations

http://www.fifamaster.org/index.php?item=news&id=148

FIFA Master Conference 2007 – Presentations of dissertations
Rebranded… Relocated… Record of attendance…

Like each year, on the day before their Graduation Ceremony, the FIFA Master Class has to publicly present their Final Projects. Usually held in a conference room at the Beaulac hotel, and attended - in addition to the family guests - by FIFA Master board members, some alumni and some sport industry guests, this year’s presentations encountered an unparalleled popular success.

Relocated…
The FIFA Master had to find a more inspiring venue to host both guests and speakers of the Final Projects presentations, and what a better venue for the FIFA(named) Master that a brand new conference room in a brand new, state-of-art, football stadium. Thus, the 7th FIFA Master Final Projects were this year presented within the new Neuchatel Xamax stadium - a 12000 seater stadium opened in March 2007 – in the main conference room, the “Espace Gilbert Fachinetti”, named after the locally famous Neuchatel Xamax Honorary President.

The Espace Fachinetti, with its view on the pitch, its private bar and dining space, as well as its well-equipped conference area brought together the current FIFA Master class, many alumni and even more sport industry guests, giving to the whole day a very professional but still relaxed atmosphere.

Rebranded…
Welcome to the first FIFA MASTER CONFERENCE!

With the quality of the Final Projects objectively increasing year after year, and the will of the CIES to attract more sport industry guests, proper, clear and adapted branding became a necessity, hence the FIFA Master Conference’s name.

This new name was used in all the promotional material and communications. Over 2000 flyers were printed and mass-mailed to the sport industry, and all participants received, on the day a “FIFA Master Conference - Executive Summaries” booklet.

Record of attendance…

FIFA Master (Futsal) Challenge

http://www.fifamaster.org/index.php?item=news&id=144

On Sunday 8th April 2007, the first ever FIFA Master Challenge took place in Neuchatel, in the Salle de la Riveraine, a brand new sport facility next to the magnificent Xamax stadium. First of all, a big thanks to the current class, which put together this event, managing to bring teams from UEFA, IOC, TSR (Swiss Television), Sportcal and a special team of Swiss athletes.

For us, at CIES, what matters, is that all the participants truly enjoyed their stay in Neuchatel, the tournament, with its friendly atmosphere and professional organisation. All stated they would definitely take part next year. Furthermore, many more organisations showed an interest in participating in the event next year (Swiss Olympics, Swiss Federal Office of Sport, Maison Internationale du Sport and Global Sports Marketing). This is fantastic news!

For CIES, this tournament really has the potential to grow and become a unique sporting event bringing together staff from international sport organisations. While many objectives can be achieved through such an event, it became clear after the success of the first edition, that CIES should take a much more active role, and lead the organisation of the tournament. The support of as many dedicated, enthusiasts and passionate volunteers as possible from each class will, of course, remain key to the success, and we hope the future editions will take on the challenge to live up to the standards set up for the 1st FIFA Master Challenge by this year's class, and strive to improve.

We firmly believe the FIFA Master Challenge and its Juvet Cup should be treated as a promotional tool for the FIFA Master, showcasing the capabilities of a class to set up an event, and providing networking opportunities in a very relaxed environment, and bringing together people from the sports industry to have fun but also as a potential B2B platform. With this in mind, we can only see the tournament growing; more importantly, we will work at raising the awareness of the event, informing the sport industry about this unique initiative through press releases, through our website, through our brochure, and hopefully through a media partner willing to embark with us on this adventure.

The FIFA Master Challenge should be as unique, multicultural and international as the FIFA Master. The event should be as professional and friendly as the FIFA Master.

Once again, we thank the current class for inspiring all participants to come back, and for inspiring CIES to do its best to take this tournament to the next level.

We hope to see you next year for the 2nd FIFA Master Challenge, and we have already one slot reserved for the defending champion (FIFA Master Alumni 2007) to defend its Juvet Cup.

FIFA Master promotion on the Ecuador Football Federation website

http://www.fifamaster.org/index.php?item=news&id=142

Exclusive interview of Roque Junior (2002 FIFA World Cup winner with Brazil) by the 7th edition FIFA Master students

http://www.fifamaster.org/index.php?item=news&id=138

Roque Junior is an experienced central defender with winner's medals from the FIFA World Cup, UEFA Champions League and Copa Libertadores.

Roque Junior has proved a valuable defender for Brazil since making his debut against the Netherlands in 1999. The highlight of his international career came in 2002 when he played in six games - all victories - on the way to victory in the FIFA World Cup in Korea/Japan.

Roque began his career at São José EC in São Paulo, before moving to SE Palmeiras in 1995 and helping them to the 1999 Copa Libertadores. He took part in the subsequent European/South American Cup final defeat by Manchester United FC. The following June, AC Milan took him to Europe on a four-year contract.

A regular at Milan during his first season, he made a vital contribution in 2002/03 after recovering from injury as Milan claimed the Serie A title and victory in the Champions League. Roque Junior came on for Alessandro Costacurta 65 minutes into the final against Juventus and played through extra time despite picking up an injury with no substitutes left. In the summer he was loaned to Leeds United AFC.

Having already suffered an Achilles injury in November, his loan was cut short in January as a cost-cutting measure, and he immediately headed to AC Siena for the rest of the season. Having helped keep them up, his loan ended and, after being released by Milan, Roque Junior moved to Bayer 04 Leverkusen where he currently plies his trade.

FIFA MA - Initially, we would like to thank you for conceding this interview to the students of the FIFA Master - 7th Edition - it is a pleasure for us to talk to you. How do you see your career up to this moment as a professional football player?

Roque Jr. - It is my pleasure. I am very happy with my career. I started really early. I left my parents’ house when I was only 14 years old with a dream of being a professional football player, win titles in big clubs and also take part of the Brazilian National Team. I managed to do it all (in fact I am still doing). I played for great teams like Palmeiras and AC Milan, developed a relationship of 6 years with the Brazilian National Team, and won major titles in the world, such as Copa Libertadores da America (Palmeiras, 1999), Champions League (AC Milan 2002/03) and FIFA World Cup (Brazil, 2002). Today I am playing for Bayer Leverkusen (Germany), and I am always trying to overcome new challenges in and out of the pitch.

FIFA MA - Talking about challenges off the pitch, part of our group is currently studying the possible opportunities for players when they retire. Do you have any plans in this sense? What are those “off the pitch challenges” you are talking about?

Roque Jr. - Yes, partially. I am now in my 7th season in the European football. During those years, I had the idea of creating a youth academy program in Brazil based in concepts of club management used in Europe. We have amazing young players emerging every year in Brazil, but no real organization to take care of them. This project, called Primeira Camisa, was then founded in December 2005 in São José dos Campos (São Paulo, BRA), where I started my professional carrier. I intend to dedicate great part of my time on this program when I stop playing professionally.

FIFA MA - As you may know, we are in the second module of the FIFA Master program, in Milan, studying the management of sports. Therefore, it would be interesting for us to know what the European management concepts that you learned in Europe are.

Roque Jr. - There are many lessons learned here in Europe which we are already applying in Primeira Camisa. Treating sponsors and partners with professionalism respect and transparency, in order to add real value to their brands, is one of them. Also it is important to establish an adequate team, with qualified professionals in each area - inside the pitch, such as coaches, physiotherapists, doctors, etc; and also outside the pitch, such as marketers, lawyers and accountants. In fact, one of the current students of this course, André Megale, is one of our legal counsels.

FIFA MA - Finally, as you played in AC Milan, what tips can you give us relating to the way of life here are?

Roque Jr. - When I was playing for AC Milan, I used to eat a lot in a restaurant called Il Giardinetto, located in Via Tortona. It is a great place in case you want to try some real Italian food.

FIFA MA - Ok, we will try this restaurant and then let you know what we thought about it. Thank you very much for the interview.

Roque Jr. - Thank you. And congratulations to FIFA for promoting this Master. The international sports’ industry really needs prepared people like you all. Good luck in your studies and your future careers.

http://www.fifamaster.org/index.php?item=news&id=137

CIES extends its academic network to Chile by signing a partnership agreement with the Universidad Santo Tomás (UST) de Santiago. As main objective, this partnership aims at organising a programme in sports management. The latter shall comprise six modules, namely: law, management, event management, communication, finance and marketing.

Aníbal Vial Etcheverría, Chancellor of UST, and Jean-Louis Juvet, President of CIES, are looking forward to this agreement that "shall develop a fruitful cooperation between the two entities and the other members of the CIES academic network” (Argentina, Senegal, and soon South Africa).

The UST, whose credo is “Tú puedes”, namely “You can do it” – is a young and dynamic academic entity founded in 1975. It numbers more that 50,000 students and is present in 17 Chilean cities. Moreover, UST has developed strong links with national sports organisations, and in particular with the National Olympic Committee and the Football Federation.

Franco Carcuro, a graduate of the “FIFA Master”, will act as the local coordinator, which demonstrates interesting synergies among the various CIES activities.

The first UST/FIFA/CIES course in Chile shall start in May 2007.

FIFA Master 8th Edition 2007-2008– News brochures available and application deadline set

http://www.fifamaster.org/index.php?item=news&id=134

The FIFA Master, the nickname of the “International Master in Management, Law and Humanities of Sport”, the one-year postgraduate course fully dedicated to sport and endorsed by FIFA, is getting ready to welcome applicants for its 8th edition 2007-2008.

The application deadline has been set to Wednesday 28th February 2007. You can download the application form online, from the FIFA Master homepage. Alternatively, you can also find the application form in the new brochure, now available, which you can also download or request online.

Since October 2000, FIFA, CIES (International Centre for Sports Studies), and the three partner universities, De Montfort University (Leicester, United Kingdom), SDA Bocconi School of Management (Milan, Italy) and the Université de Neuchâtel (Neuchâtel, Switzerland), have been collaborating to offer this unique postgraduate degree, taught in three different European campuses.

Through a well-balanced programme, covering the humanities of sport (ethics, history, sociology etc.), sports management (strategy, marketing, finance, organisation) and sports law (sport & health, sports business & law, methods of dispute resolution, status of the sportsperson etc.), the FIFA Master aims to provide the right skills, knowledge and understanding of the key issues that sport is facing today and will face in the future.

In addition to Academic Excellence and Sport Industry Knowledge, the two pillars of the programme, the FIFA Master truly brings an unequalled multi-cultural dimension through the 25 to 30 postgraduates, usually coming from no fewer than 20 countries.

Furthermore, besides a rich academic curriculum and a real multicultural experience, the FIFA Master does its best to integrate the “real world” - the sports business world - into the theoretical framework, thanks to the involvement of more than a hundred high-level sports executives who are invited to share their expertise and experience, and through various study visits to prestigious sports organisations (FIFA, IOC, Manchester United, London2012, Inter Milan, International Cycling Union, Bolton Wanderers, UEFA, Rugby Football Union etc.).

Po has served on the board since January 2006 when he was nominated as a director by Midas Way, the company owned by a life long Brentford supporter, Matthew Benham, which made a £500,000 interest free loan to the club as part of the Bees United takeover.
http://www.fifamaster.org/index.php?item=news&id=130

A survivor of the Munich air disaster, a FIFA World Cup™ winner in 1966, a Knight of the British Empire but above all, a great and an honest player. Sir Bobby Charlton, one of football’s true ambassadors, is the Patron of the current FIFA Master edition.

The current twenty-eight FIFA Master students, to graduate next Wednesday 12th July, will have the honour to be awarded their diploma by Sir Bobby Charlton himself. Two days after the FIFA World Cup™ 2006 final in Berlin, Sir Bobby Charlton will indeed be the very special guest of the FIFA Master Graduation Ceremony in Neuchâtel.

Sir Bobby Charlton is without doubt one of the most famous English players of all time. His name is synonymous with some of the greatest moments in the English game, but also with the highest traditions of sportsmanship and integrity. Bobby using his pace out of midfield and with a thunderous shot, scored some of the most spectacular goals English football has ever seen. Born in Ashington on October 11th 1937, he was signed by Manchester United when aged 17. As one of the "Busby Babes" to survive the Munich air disaster, he teamed up with Denis Law and George Best in the 1960s to produce some of United's greatest ever football.

Sir Bobby Charlton remained faithful to United and in his time there from 1956-73, he won the league championship three times, the FA Cup once and the European Cup once. Benfica was beaten 4-1 in a memorable final in 1968 at Wembley. All in all Charlton played more than 750 games for Manchester United and scored 247 goals in all competitions. He was also voted "European Footballer of the Year" in 1966. The same year England hosted and won the World Cup for their first and so far only time, a triumph in which Charlton was instrumental. Charlton played 106 times for England - a record at that time - and scored 49 goals, which is still a record in English football.

All the world was represented with no continent exclusion. China, Australia, Malaysia, Russia, Morocco, Cuba, Argentina, Brazil, USA and many more countries were all present on behalf of the 48 nationalities the 100 alumni belong to.

The two day gathering started with the General Assembly taking place on Saturday morning at the International Broadcasting Centre (IBC) in Munich. It heard reports on the FIFA Alumni Association’s latest activities, future programmes, coming new website presentation, new-elected FMA Committee introduction and the launch of FIFA Master Alumni motto ‘you will never work alone’.

‘The FMA Alumni Association’s aim’ – explained Mr Arnaud Le Mintier, outgoing FMA Alumni Committee President and 1st edition alumnus – ‘is to promote and reinforce contacts, information and mutual assistance, in terms of employment prospects, among all our members, in particular across the various editions of the FIFA Master. That’s why we forged the motto: ‘you will never work alone’.

Special guest speaker of the morning session was Francis Tellier, CEO of Host Broadcast Services, the dedicated broadcast organisation with the mandate of producing television and radio signals for the 2002 and 2006 FIFA World Cups and recently awarded the host broadcast of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa. Mr Tellier speech was the opportunity to exchange knowledge and experience in sport business where over 80% of graduates are actually applying their skills and competencies within sport institutions and at premier sporting events.

The programme followed with the guided tour of the IBC and lunch at the inside IBC restaurant.

During the brief afternoon session the FMA Alumni Committee awarded Mr Jean-Louis Juvet, CIES President - the International Centre for Sport Studies coordinating the Master Programme - with a FIFA WC 2006 mascot, a symbolic prize to thank Mr Juvet for the outstanding and valuable support provided to the growth and development of the Association since its foundation.

The FMA Alumni group spent the whole Saturday afternoon at Munich Olympia Park enjoying the Fan Fest and the two games Portugal-Iran and Czech Republic-Ghana to warm-up for the ‘hottest’ match of the day Italy and USA watched at a typical Bavarian Tavern were dinner was served.

After two hour football match between Alumni at Bezirkssportanlage Sporting Centre in Munich, on Sunday afternoon the group met at the feverish and sold-out FIFA World Cup Stadium Munich to watch the match Brasil and Australia.

The ‘FIFA Master’ is a one year Master of Advanced Studies degree in Management, Law and Humanities of sport endorsed. Created by FIFA in October 2000 and coordinated by CIES, it is a unique Master degree for a select class of 25 to 30 international students on a yearly basis.

The intensive international curriculum takes place at three top European universities: De Montfort University, Leicester, England, SDA Bocconi - School of Management, Milan, Italy and Université de Neuchâtel, Neuchâtel, Switzerland, where the students attend respectively a trimester in Humanities, Management and Law of sport and conclude the 11 month course getting their degree with the presentation of a final project. The aim of the course is to cover all aspects of sports - historical, sociological, ethical, managerial and legal perspectives - providing the tools for sports executives to properly manage the ever-expanding sport business.

125 graduates from 48 nationalities have attended the FIFA-endorsed academic course and 28 postgraduate students are now concluding the 6th edition. Currently there are 10 Alumni working both directly and indirectly on the FIFA World Cup 2006 for FIFA, The German Organizing Committee and several associated organisations or sponsors, while many others are holding executive positions in the sport world such as General Secretary, Marketing Director, General Manager, Legal Director, CEO, and Business Development Director. A few additional companies include: IOC, UEFA, Olympic Summer and Winter Games, CONMEBOL, AFC, English FA, FIA, FC Bayern München, IMG, iSe, Infront Sport & Media, and T.E.A.M.
Munich weekend for FIFA Master Alumni

http://www.fifamaster.org/index.php?item=news&id=128

They came from Kuala Lumpur, Cuba and Morocco, from the USA, Australia, China and a host of other countries too.

The official slogan of the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany™, 'A time to make friends™', was an absolutely perfect fit for the 100-strong group, who were attending the Group F encounter between Brazil and Australia. Sunday's match at the FIFA World Cup Stadium Munich was the joyous conclusion of a wonderful, unforgettable weekend in the Bavarian capital.

More than 100 current and former FIFA Master (MA) students in sports management, law and humanities met on 17 and 18 June in Munich for a FIFA Master Alumni (FMA) get-together. "It was the first meeting of this sort since the course was introduced six years ago", reported Kevin Tallec Marston, co-organiser and graduate from the class of 2003. "Meeting up with so many old friends, and exchanging views and experiences, was just fantastic."

FIFA, in partnership with the International Center for Sports Studies (CIES) in Neuchatel, Switzerland, set up this programme in October 2000. The course is organised between De Montfort University (in Leicester, Great Britain), SDA Bocconi (Milan, Italy), and Neuchatel University. A total of 125 students from 48 countries have completed the intensive ten-month programme, with another 28 set to graduate this year.

The 2006 FIFA World Cup provided the worthy excuse for a major get-together of current and former students. The party gathered nice and early on Saturday morning at 8.15 am at the International Broadcasting Centre (IBC) for a plenary session. Proceedings included a presentation illustrating the latest developments in the FIFA Masters and elections to the FMA Committee. On a lighter note, the party toured the IBC and lunched together.

The group set off for the Fan Fest at the Olympic Park in the afternoon, taking in the games between Portugal and Iran and the Czech Republic and Ghana. Dinner was served in a traditional Munich beer hall; Italy's turbulent meeting with the USA providing an enthralling backdrop. "It was great seeing the whole 'family' again in this fabulous setting," Marston said.

Before making their way to the stadium for Sunday's match, most of the alumni had a playing engagement of their own. The group held a two-hour kickabout on a nearby playing field, before the weekend ended with a trip to watch the five-time FIFA World Cup winners take on the Australian Socceroos.

On Monday morning, the alumni scattered to all four corners of the globe, where most are employed in sporting functions for national and international associations (FIFA, UEFA, IOC), clubs (Bayern Munich, Manchester United, AC Milan), in the sports equipment industry, in the media or in sport sponsorship, a hint at the broad range of activity available to FIFA Master graduates.

"Our extensive network, which we'll expand with this meeting, keeps us in contact with each other across all five continents. It's unique, and offers us a world of possibilities," a highly satisfied Marston declared. All participants agreed on a repeat of the event, no later than four years from now when it will be a time to make friends in South Africa.

Tuli Shipanga says thank you to CIES & CAF in style!

http://www.fifamaster.org/index.php?item=news&id=124

Tuli saying thank you in style, what do you mean by that?

I am extremely grateful and thankful to both the Centre International d'Etudes du Sport (CIES) and the Confederation of African Football for awarding me with a joint scholarship that enabled me to pursue my ambition. That is to obtain one of the highest, if not the best postgraduate sports programme degree in the world, the FIFA Masters.

My recognition from fellow country men and women to participate in the bidding process and in particular the Head of State justifies the just investment of both CIES and CAF. I can selflessly admit that without my enrollment in this course, these opportunities would not have come my way at the rate as they did.

You were recently selected as an Ambassador for Namibia’s bid to host the 2010 African Cup of Nations (AFCON). What is the role of the Bid Ambassadors?

The 2010 AFCON Bid Ambassadors is a volunteer position to promote the bid in their personal capacities, underlining their endorsements of the bid. For example, the Ambassador may be requested to officiate at events and mobilize resources for the bid campaign. Being the youngest member on the committee I would probably be expected to mobilize the youth sector.

How do you feel about your nomination as the youngest Bid Ambassador for Namibia?

Indeed, Iam humbled and at the same time honored, to have been nominated an Ambassador for the Bid. This will be another remarkable chapter in the history of our young democratic country.
An opportunity to showcase the harmony in diversity which has become a trademark of our country, a country I would like to refer to as one of Africa’s hidden treasures.

Why did Namibia bid to host 2010 African Cup of Nations?

Namibia does not only have the necessary infrastructure to be able to host the African Cup of Nations, but what we have achieved as a young nation in establishing a democratic system, running a successful free market system, and maintaining peace and stability, makes us proud to share this with our brothers and sisters on the continent, and the rest of the world.

Football is the nation’s favorite sport and we offer some of the world’s most exciting tourist destinations. In accommodation and travel, we offer world-class facilities at affordable prices.
Moreover, we are fully aware of the benefits of hosting Africa’s greatest sporting event on Namibian soil. The investment in more infrastructure, football development, and tourism will mean a return on investment in terms of economic upturn, which means increased tourism, more jobs, and improved performance of Namibian football.

Who are your competitors?

Mozambique, Nigeria, Senegal, Gabon & Equatorial Guinea (joint bid), Angola, Zimbabwe and Libya.

How does Namibia compare?

CAF statutes state that countries which have not yet hosted the tournament will be given preference; this reduces the chances of Senegal and Nigeria. The political situation in Zimbabwe is likely to have a negative impact on their chances. Gabon and Equatorial Guinea, as well as Angola have the petrodollars to fund the project what ever the cost. The concern however might be readiness for the tournament as most stadiums will have to be constructed, as well as roads and hotels. The same can be said about Mozambique who is planning to construct three new stadiums for the tournament. Libya is certainly the dark horse. The internal politics of Libyan football have at times not been viewed favorably by CAF.

Can you share with us areas that might prove detrimental for Namibia to win the bid?

Good question Roland. Interestingly enough I should say there aren’t a lot, however the few there is will prove as catalyst, and that is the small population of Namibia with an estimated 2.2 million people. Due to this the market might not be viewed as a huge commercial area for exploitation in terms of additional revenues from ticket sales and commercial packages and TV rights. I am sure you can understand why I cannot indulge too much as I wouldn’t want to give our opponents a competitive advantage, ha ha.

How will Namibia, as a country, benefit?

The infrastructure development will put Namibia in an excellent position to host nations participating in the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. The infrastructure development will also create jobs for Namibians and further boost the economy with an estimate number of 16,800 job creation opportunities.

The upgrade and provision of additional facilities will improve the quality of sport in the country. Thus, the improved facilities will be for the benefit of Namibians, promoting a healthier and fitter society. It is a brilliant opportunity to market Namibia, enhancing Namibia’s position as a major tourist destination. Both the formal and informal sectors will generate considerable additional revenue due to the number of visitors. Football will undergo a significant change for the better, on and off the field.

Does Namibia have experience in hosting an event of this magnitude?

Absolutely!… (deh) just to mention the recent events we hosted
2005: FIM Moto X World Cup;
2005: Confederation of Africa Cup (CAR Cup) finals;
2005: Under 19 Cricket and Rugby qualifying matches; 2005:
2004: Fist ball World Cup Finals; 2004: Horse Riding World Cup qualifiers and then we already ahead of schedule anticipating hosting the coming: Zone Six African Youth Games in June 2006

You sound enthusiastic and confident. What triggers this reaction?

Who wouldn’t be? Look at the continued progress of former hosts Burkina Faso and Mali who started with far limited resources. The recent qualification for the 2006 FIFA World Cup of the likes of Angola, Togo, Ghana, Ivory Coast ahead of the “giants” of African football also serves as a source of inspiration for Namibians who believe that the enthusiasm we have makes us capable of living our short term dream, namely, staging the 2010 AFCON. Namibia would be proud to host the 2010 African Cup of Nations. The infrastructure to host this, Africa’s most prestigious sporting event, is already 90% in place, with only stadium capacities having to be expanded. We have world-class accommodation, modern sports and excellent transport infrastructure, Since independence, the country has truly developed its multi-cultural character. There is a rich and colorful uniquely African vigor that blends in with the European influences on architecture, food, customs and art, all merging to create a distinct Namibian character.

I understand you are a qualified coach as well. Which team do you think will win the Champions League?

One should give credit were credit is due, and that is that the team from Catalunya is playing football out of this world. The dynamism of midfield players from both teams triggers me to attempt to compare them to the 1974-1988 squad of the Netherlands with the likes of Frank Rijkaard, Ruud Gullit, Marco Van Basten and Ronald Koeman. Their free-flowing attacking football that has been their trademark since the great days of Cruyff reminds me of great African midfielders the likes of Roger Mila, Dr. Khumalo and Lolo Goraseb.

Nonetheless if there is a team and in particular a person that truly deserves to add to his collection of trophies than it is non other than Henry Thierry. I’m sure it is one trophy that has eluded him for some time before he leaves (oops…). Contrary to this, the same can be said about Ronaldinho who also won almost all the major titles in football except this particular one, thus it will be an interesting encounter between these two talented footballers.

Call me biased but being a former defender myself there is nothing I admire more than a rock solid defense, both teams seems to be boosting with high quality defenders. Notwithstanding the fact that the title for this year will be determined by the best defensive team with head to head consistent performers from the likes of Puyol and Kolo Toure. Such a defensive solidity gives both teams and in particular Arsenal sound foundation for yet another major victory.

According to reports the Hollywood hottest couple Angelina Jodie and Brad Pitt escaped for almost a month to Namibia and is considering giving birth to their child in Namibia and giving her a local name. What is your opinion on this?

Interesting question Roland! It’s quite simple in fact since it is not the 1st visit of Angelina to Namibia. Along with music stars such as Michael Jackson, Jennifer Lopez alias (J-Lo), Tyresse just to mention a few all grace and escape to this African treasure. However as I have mentioned before a beautiful country with a growing economy, political stability, sound democratic system with huge amounts of funds being invested since Independence (1990) in Education and Women empowerment. Namibia also boosts with an environmental friendly status as one of the worlds least polluted country.

Friendly people respecting your basic human rights, top quality medical facilities for their new born and an eating experience second to none, are just a few our country can offer.
With regard to giving them a local name well what other name can best fit a child born by this couple in the most beautiful country in the world than my own traditional name “Tuli-Pamwe”
meaning togetherness. This name embraces the diversed multi-cultural ethnic groups living together in Namibia with peace and harmony alongside the rest of emigrants from across the world. However for this child it will not be about the name, but where s/he was born Namibia.

FIFA Master Postgraduates visit to UCI - Union Cycliste Internationale, by Isabella Burczak

http://www.fifamaster.org/index.php?item=news&id=123

In a charming setting in Aigle, surrounded by mountains and bike paths aplenty, the UCI is the International Federation which governs the sport of cycling and regulates over 1500 international races on a yearly basis with the collaboration of its 165 national federations. For a cycling fanatic whose closest companion is a Specialized M4 by the name of Special Ed, the opportunity to visit the headquarters of the International Cycling Union and to meet with its various directors was a memorable and enriching experience which I had been awaiting for weeks.

We were first greeted at the UCI by Robert Dill-Bundi, gold medal winner in the 4000m individual pursuit at the 1980 Moscow Olympics and current Public Relations Manager of the UCI. Our day of presentations then started with Dieter Schellenberg, the Director General of the UCI, who presented an overview of the federation’s roles and main areas of administration to help us better understand the ins and outs of its daily activities.

Next, we moved on to legal issues faced by the federation with a presentation by Jean-Luc Dormond, the Legal Services Manager. This was followed by lunch in the cafeteria which, great food notwithstanding, was even more mouth watering due to the T-Mobile Giant TCR bike on display near our tables.

The afternoon session started with a presentation by Gerrit Middag, Events Department Manager who, after an engaging video on the various disciplines in cycling, explained the intricacies involved in organizing and staging international cycling events.

Finally, our last presenter was seven-time track cycling world champion Frédéric Magné who, as Training and Development Manager, explained the roles of the World Cycling Center in enabling the development of emerging talent by means of diverse training camps and coaching courses.

However, the best part was yet to come, as my classmates and I were offered the possibility to go for a spin either on the 350-meter BMX outdoor track with Johan Lindström, UCI BMX Sports coordinator, or experience the thrills of track cycling on the 200-meter wood velodrome with Mr. Dill-Bundi. However, after personally suffering from “bike withdrawal syndrome” for months, the possibility to speed around the track was simply too compelling. All equipped with Pinarello fixed-gear bikes, where one faces the impossibility to break and change gears, we all remembered Mr. Dill-Bundi’s golden words - “Remember, just don’t stop pedaling” - before racing around the steeply banked track. As for the successes encountered by the BMX initiation group, I have a suspicion that a few FIFA Master postgraduates could make it on the starting lists as the discipline makes its official Olympic debut at Beijing 2008. Alas, all good things must come to an end, and so I was obliged to part with my new two-wheeled friend as we boarded the bus back to Neuchâtel, with a few souvenirs courtesy of the UCI in hand. Altogether, a perfect day!

The FIFA Master Alumni in the Press – Thalia Mitsi (current postgraduate), FIFA Referee

http://www.fifamaster.org/index.php?item=news&id=119

The Greek sports newspaper “Sportime” (www.sportime.gr) has dedicated an article in its special edition “Sportlife” to FIFA Master postgraduate Thalia Mitsi.

Football referee and citizen of the world, Thalia Mitsi has been selected twice by FIFA; once to referee international football matches and another time to participate in the FIFA Master, the International Master in Management, Law and Humanities of Sport.

Thalia, who started refereeing some years ago in Rome, is one of the 28 students from all over the world that have been selected by the Scientific Committee to attend the Master. In particular, she has been awarded a scholarship and she is actually the only referee in the world to have ever attended the FIFA Master.

What is the relationship though between refereeing and a postgraduate program like that? Thalia mentions: “Although the subject of our studies is not directly connected to my duties as a referee, the fact that the Master takes place in three different countries of Europe, helps me to understand thoroughly the sports philosophy of countries with a great tradition in sports. This has assisted me to have a better understanding in all aspects of the sport that I have decided to serve.”

But how is it possible for someone to combine at the same time a Master programme, continuous travelling and a further ambition, that of refereeing games in the third national division? “If I did not have enthusiasm and love for sports, I would not be able to tie in to all these demands. My days roll somewhere among university classes, projects, training sessions… and airports. It can be very tiring but my love for football keeps me going!”

2006-03-23 - FIFA Master Postgraduates trip to Coverciano, the FIGC Technical Headquarter (by Efrat Gal-Or)

http://www.fifamaster.org/index.php?item=news&id=117

As per usual, the day began when most of the city was still in a deep sleep. Twenty-nine dreery eyed people met in front of SDA Bocconi at 6am and quickly returned to a deep sleep on the bus ride to Coverciano. Three hours later, on the outskirts of Florence, we were re-energised and ready to have a day filled with interesting lectures and a tour of the Coverciano training ground.

As this was an overnight stay, we got the hotel arrangements out of the way first. With just over an hour before going to Coverciano, we quickly settled in, grabbed lunch, and suited-up. Upon our arrival at the ground, we commenced a series of interesting lectures (some more interesting and provoking than others), and were given a detailed tour of the facilities. Our afternoon lecture was unfortunately cancelled, so the time was used by most people to shake off the prolonged bus stiffness, prepare for the evening meal, and refresh prior to another long day.

The early evening was great. Many of us met Antonio - our Florence native - in the city. We were privileged to receive a most excellent tour of the city, where several historical sites were explained. Our tour (not surprisingly) led us to a nice bar for a well deserved (as always) aperitivo. After the aperitivo, some of us went to a small pizzeria, while others waited for a grand late dinner planed by Antonio.

The second day of the trip came all too soon. Having met a couple of alumni the evening previous, we knew we had a treat awaiting us. The day began with lectures, and it wasn't soon enough that we met the alumni in the classroom - it's always amazing and encouraging (and relieving) to meet alumni working in the field of sport and hear about their experiences. Other bonuses were a nice lunch time meal, the chance to wonder on the various soccer pitches, and a tour through the soccer museum.

Finally, it was time to leave beautiful Florence and head back to Milano. What a great trip it was. Florence, you'll be seeing me again!

As you know, after the Humanities module in Leicester, the FIFA Master is now in Milan, before moving to Neuchatel end of March. The year 2006 is not only the year of the Winter Olympic Games, but we were fortunate that it was held in Torino which was only couple of hours from Milan. So, we had the chance to go enjoy the Winter Olympic Games.

I used this opportunity to go to three events, Biathlon 10km for men, the French Team usually being quite good, Curling (Women's Round Robin), (I am sure you will be wondering how a French girl can go to a curling event!), and 50km Cross Country Skiing for men, the last event of these Olympics.

Let’s start by biathlon. It was the first event I went to which took place at San Sicario, which takes an hour by car and bus from Torino. It was a beautiful day, a little bit cold but not too bad. At 13.30, the first athlete started skiing against the clock. For those who are not familiar with Biathlon , it is basically an event which involves skiing and shooting. At each run (in total 5), each skier has to shoot lying down or standing up 5 circles on the target. If he misses one target, he has to do a penalty ski tour. After having seen the best biathletes from various countries, we could see two " unusual " athletes: a Greek and an Australian! The public was cheering them on. It was great to see everybody supporting every athlete and it did not matter what their nationalities were. At the end, a German, called Fisher, won again (another German had already won the 15 km event 2 days before). The French athletes were out of the podium….

Moving on to curling. You still must be wondering what a French girl is doing at a curling event. Normally, it is only for the Canadians… But for me to witness a new sport event is enjoyable. I had the opportunity to see three matches: Italy-USA, Norway-Great Britain and Sweden-Japan.

Italy-USA was quick; the Italian women team is definitely not the best. Norway-Great Britain was more interesting as the match was close. But the best was Sweden-Japan. A strategic game, very close, with a lot of tension and concentration. This is when I started to enjoy curling and understand the rules, the strategies and so on.

By the way, the Swedish Women's team went on to win the Olympics. Curling is definitely not only for Canadians….

Finally, I had the chance to go to the last event of the Torino Olympic Games: 50km Cross Country for men. Just over two hours of race, beautiful sunny day with ten thousand Italians and of course other supporters. An exceptional atmosphere to help all the skiers, from China to South Africa to USA , Algeria (Noredine from Algeria being the crowd favourite) to Japan to Norway.

At the end of the race, unexpectedly an Italian won. Vincent Vittoz, the French athlete, attacked one km from the end, but his attack was way too early and the Italian used that to his advantage and finally passed the French to win the race. At this time, tens of thousand Italians started a big party on the slopes. I have never seen that before, and it was just an unbelievable experience.

To sum up, for a sports lover like me it was such a great joy to take part at these sport events, with a huge worldwide dimension: The Turin 2006 Olympic Games.

FIFA Master Postgraduates Volunteering at Sports Events - Torino Winter Olympic Games (by Efthalia Mitsi)

http://www.fifamaster.org/index.php?item=news&id=107

After having worked for the Olympic and Paralympic Games of Athens 2004 and having lived that fantastic Olympic experience, I immediately decided to apply, a year and a half ago, as a volunteer this time for Torino 2006. I was excited by the Italian culture, too and I was expecting the Games to be a marvellous experience. Indeed, it was unforgettable. Although I had to be present on the FIFA Master course, I was able to find some time, during evenings and weekends to run to Turin.

I was enrolled in the spectators’ services (M.O.S.T Team), which practically meant taking care of the spectators at different venues every day, wherever there was specific need. That was great because in this way, I had the chance to visit many Olympic venues, meet all kinds of people and also get to know some sports which I would hardly ever have attended in a sunny country like Greece. I watched Ice Hockey and Artistic Skating, while in my hometown of Athens, there is not even one ice rink (anymore)! Wonderful to watch these sports, especially live! Not to mention the breathtaking snow sports that took place in the Italian Alps around Turin. Well, actually I had already seen beautiful scenery like that…believe it or not, there are beautiful mountains in Greece, just not that high! And of course the opening and closing ceremonies, which were fascinating and gathered spectators, officials and athletes from all over the world. And what a sense of pride when listening to the Greek national anthem as the Greek flag was raised in honour of giving birth to the Olympic Games!

The flame at the Olympic Stadium of Turin was put out on Sunday the 26th of February leaving unforgettable memories in my mind and heart…next stop Beijing?

FIFA Master Postgraduates Volunteering at Sports Events - Speed Skating Sprint World Cup, Collalbo, Italy (by Daniela Fink)

http://www.fifamaster.org/index.php?item=news&id=105

January 28-29th 2006

The Ice Rink Ritten is one of the fastest speed skating tracks in the world. The altitude (1.200m), the climate and the quality of the water (for the preparation of the ice) make this outdoor track so unique. Outstanding athletes like Jeremy Wotherspoon have established world records on this rink. Thus, it was an honour for me to volunteer for the event (which took place in my hometown). I tried to help out as best I could in the accreditation and press office. We had to coordinate the press and help them with the wireless connections. The reporters and photographers were in and out of the press office constantly. However, some of them had some (little) spare time to chat about their job and complain about certain exclusive events like F1 were they have to pay for everything including the wireless connection. One of the German freelance photographers was off right after the event for a photo shoot with the German National Team in Cologne. The Dutch press stuck to their “national-speed-skating-pride”, even thought their team was not that successful. The interaction with the Korean and Japanese press was slightly difficult due to language barriers. As far as the accreditation is concerned we basically just needed to make sure that only registered people could get into the accreditation-area.

The event was well organized and all the volunteers were perfectly integrated and each person knew exactly what they had to do. The only thing that was missing was the hype of the public. Not even big names in speed skating like Anni Friesinger (GER) or Joey Cheek (USA) could attract the public.

The first day, the spectacular fall of Chiara Simionato (ITA) during the 1000m race against Anni Friesinger (GER) drew the attention of the Italian and German press. Simionato admitted that she had never slipped in a race before, but she made up for her bad performance by winning the 500 meters on both days.

The 500m men were dominated by Joey Cheek who was also the biggest rival of the gold medal winner Enrico Fabris at the Olympic Games in Torino. The 1000m were dominated by USA skaters Shani Davis and Joey Cheek. Davis broke the outdoor World Record and established a new rink record.

The event itself was a success: all major and minor problems were solved in a heart beat and the organization was excellent. This is due to the fact that the local community identifies with the event and is willing to help. All the volunteers were locals and each one of them did a great job and it was fun working with them! Hopefully, next year, the European Championship in Speed Skating will be welcomed with more enthusiasm by the public in the region, but also across the regional boarders. The hype of the spectators would make the ISU Speed Skating Events truly unique, also in Italy!

Social Life - FIFA Master Alumni vs. Current Class soccer match (by Eugene Delaney)

http://www.fifamaster.org/index.php?item=news&id=104

The long awaited FIFA Master Alumni vs. Current Class soccer match finally took place on Saturday 11th February. The Alumni team featured past greats such as Tiziano “the tiger” Gaier, Diederik “the destroyer” Dewaele, Jair “the Ballerina” Bertoni, João “the injured” Frigerio, Giovanni “the organiser” Pifarotti & Kevin “the thumb” Tallec.

The game started well with both teams playing some excellent football. The Alumni, who were expecting an easy victory, soon realized that they had a match on their hands. The Alumni took the early lead but the current class soon pulled it back to 2-2 at the first break.

The students started to dominate after the break but just couldn’t convert the chances and possession into goals due to some excellent goalkeeping and last ditch tackles by the alumni. By the second break the scores were tied at 5-5.

The final period started, with the alumni racing to a 2 goal lead. The students reorganised and after some magical football, the score was tied at 7-7. The students maintained this breathtaking football and the alumni was left in awe as the students took a 10-7 lead with 2 minutes left on the clock. The alumni managed to score a consolation goal before the match ended 10-8 to the students. (Student team: Ken, Guillermo, Panos, Pau, Delano, Marcelo, Antonio, Rob, Oliver & Eugene)

After the match some of the students and Alumni ventured to Pogue Mahone’s Irish pub to watch the France vs. Ireland rugby match and have some much needed refreshments. We were treated to a magnificent second half of rugby by the Irish team but unfortunately the deficit from the first half was too much. It was particularly enjoyable for João as he introduced himself to the current students.

At 8pm, the alumni and many of the current students meet for aperitivo. We then moved on to a disco bar located in the centre of piazzale Maggio. We were treated to various types of dancing from both the students and the alumni – Latino, barstool, table and speaker!! A great night was had by and as we parted company we looked forward to our next meeting with the Alumni in Switzerland.

FIFA Master Postgraduates trips to San Siro (by Zachariah Joseph)

http://www.fifamaster.org/index.php?item=news&id=102

I have to say that Stadio Giuseppe Meazza or more famously known as the San Siro is one of the best football stadiums I have been to.

On a match day, it’s either a sea of blue and black or red and black. It’s quite unbelievable how different the stadium atmosphere is when the two different home teams play at the San Siro. They are of course Inter Milan and AC Milan.

I visited Stadio San Siro for the first time on January 8th for the Milan- Parma match. Who said Italian football was basically boring goalless draws? This match finished Milan 4 – Parma 3.

The next few matches at San Siro finished:
Inter Milan 3 - Palermo 0
AC Milan 1 - Sampdoria 1
Inter Milan 3 - Cagliari 2
Inter Milan 1 - Chievo 0
AC Milan 5 - Treviso 0
Inter Milan 1 - Juventus 2

26 goals in 7 games in the Italia Serie A is just incredible. It could be even some sort of record at the San Siro.

The Champions League matches are scheduled for February and March at the San Siro. AC Milan play Bayern Munich and Inter Milan take on Ajax from Amsterdam.

We are so fortunate to be in Milan doing the Management module at SDA Bocconi and I would definitely recommend that everyone should take this opportunity to go to at least one game to this historic stadium in Milan.

Ducati - Field visit of the FIFA Master postgraduates (by Kenneth Quah)

http://www.fifamaster.org/index.php?item=news&id=99

Even while most of Milan was still asleep, our day had already started as we caught an early coach to Bologna, home of Ducati. Consequently, most of us were grateful for the 2.5 hours of sleep we managed to steal on our way, aided by heavy fog and in a particular case, a pillow.

Upon our arrival in Bologna, things got underway rather quickly with the museum tour by curator Livio who shared the history of Ducati with much pride and passion. Then we were seated in a cosy enclave resembling an auditorium where Lucio, the CEO's assistant, shared on the various aspects of the Ducati organisation. This tied in neatly with what we had learnt in our week’s worth of Organisation and HR Management lectures.

In the course of our packed schedule, we were also very fortunate to have the opportunity to meet Ducati Corse CEO, Claudio Domenicali and the MotoGP Team Director who spoke to us about the various aspects of management. We even got a golden quote from Claudio who emphatically declared, "I don't care what management theory says, but for me it is impossible [for an organization] to do well with average people!"

After the marathon of presentations, we proceeded to a wonderful private lunch, compliments of Ducati. There, we were joined by Ducati staff who had attended corporate MBA programs. We gained a better understanding of Ducati’s unique organisation and work culture in our exchange with them. Refreshed after the meal, we continued on an interesting tour of the factory to observe how these race-winning bikes are manufactured. Our final stop was the Ducati souvenir store where we were generously presented with a Ducati model bike each. Charmed by Ducati, many of us browsed and shopped for other merchandise while others admired the bikes on display dreamily.

As the day drew to a close, some of us made our way back to Milan, while others opted to stay for the Ducati company dinner and party where they would have the opportunity to meet with the Ducati race riders and staff. How cool is that?

Lega Calcio - Field visit of the FIFA Master postgraduates (by Oliver Hollai)

http://www.fifamaster.org/index.php?item=news&id=96

Last Tuesday the class had the opportunity to visit Lega Calcio, the organization responsible for the Italian Professional Football League. After meeting up at Bocconi, a couple of stops by tram here, some more stops by underground there, mixed with Jair’s unrivaled navigational skills in Milan, we found ourselves in front of Lega’s nondescript office building.

On the inside however, it was unmistakably all about football. Walking up to the first floor, the walls of the stairway are adorned with pictures of Italian greats. Already enjoying the atmosphere, we received a pleasant surprise in the form of coffee, tea and pastries waiting for us in a cozy little room designated for such purposes.

Then it was onto the presentation itself, held by Fabio Santoro and our alumni, Giovanni Pifarotti, which was very impressive in its level of thoroughness (I bet that my country’s FA would pay good money for a copy…). We found out, among other things, that Lega Calcio is responsible for Serie A, Serie B, Italian Cup, Supercup, as well as the Primavera youth championships.

As interesting as that was, what I will remember most from this visit was the honor of being in such a prestigious conference room, as the presentation was held in the same exact space as where high ranking Italian football officials regularly meet. Very comfortable, well designed seating, a huge projection screen, and walls covered with elegantly sculpted plaques commemorating Italian football’s Champions, Cup Winners, and European Cup Winners. History...

The FIFA Master Alumni in the Press – Kevin Tallec Marston (graduate 2003)

http://www.fifamaster.org/index.php?item=news&id=95

Beyond the white lines of the pitch - Kevin Tallec Marston, 28, is doing a PhD on youth football at De Montfort University, Leicester (UK).

Youth football has always been a large part of my life, as a player, volunteer, coach and club director. My first word as a baby was "ball" , and old photos show me as a two-year-old in an FC Nantes children's kit. My mother is French and she was a pioneer of women's football, founding one of the first women's teams in Nantes in the mid 1960s.

My father is American and I grew up in France and in the States, where I did a BA in French and Music. It never crossed my mind to study football until I stumbled across the Fifa International Master in management, law and humanities of sport at De Montfort. I was the director of a youth football club at the time and one night I met up with a friend for coffee. He knew someone who was doing the Fifa Master and my eyes lit up. I said, " You've gotta be kidding me, you can get a Masters in this?" I read that the goal of the course was to educate and form people to work as sport managers and I thought, "That's just brilliant."

I started my PhD last year and my working title is "Where is Youth Football going?: The Professionalisation of Youth Development/Formation" . I aim to trace the major trends in youth development since 1960 and to uncover hidden problems such as the exploitation of young workers, pressures on the young player, and the social irresponsibility of some sports organisations.

I'll be exploring and comparing different national traditions of organised youth football in England, France, the States and Italy. I'm not looking at recreational leagues or street football, but associations which provide the talent base for professional clubs. The relationship between youth and sport must be understood beyond the four white lines of the pitch, so I need to look into social, economic and legal issues. It's quite a delicate area, because you could say that some youth clubs potentially train young people in order to make money; they are developing human capital.

As yet there are few regulations about youth sport at international level and those that exist are vague. What we're talking about here are minors. Take the footballer Freddy Adu, he was said to be just 14 when he signed with DC United in the States two years ago. Yet American labour laws say you need to be 16 to have a full-time job.

My parents are very supportive of my research and I spend a lot of time talking to them about it. After all, they have three kids - my two sisters and me - who have all gone through youth football.

http://www.fifamaster.org/index.php?item=news&id=88

Interested in a postgraduate course focusing on all aspects of sport, fully endorsed by FIFA, coordinated by the International Centre for Sports Studies (CIES), and taught by three European universities on three different campuses…?

Since October 2000, FIFA, CIES, and three partner universities, De Montfort University (Leicester, UK), SDA Bocconi-School of Management (Milan, Italy) and the Université de Neuchâtel (Neuchâtel, Switzerland), have been collaborating to offer a unique postgraduate degree, dedicated exclusively to sport, the FIFA Master.

Through a very well-balanced programme, covering the humanities of sport (ethics, history, sociology etc.), sports management (strategy, marketing, finance, organisation) and sports law (sport & health, sports business & law, methods of dispute resolution, status of the sportsperson etc.), the FIFA Master aims to provide the right skills, knowledge and understanding of the key issues that sport is facing today and will face in the future.

Every year, a selected group of 25 to 30 postgraduates have the privilege to follow the intensive, ten-month, full-time curriculum put together by the FIFA Master Executive Board. International by its teaching, the programme is even more international in terms of its postgraduates, who usually come from some 20 countries.

In addition to a rich curriculum and a real multicultural experience, the FIFA Master does its best to integrate the “real world”, the sports business world, with the academic and theoretical framework, thanks to the involvement of more than a hundred high-level sports executives who are invited to share their expertise and experience, and through various study visits to prestigious sports organisations (FIFA, IOC, Manchester United, Inter Milan, International Cycling Union, Bolton Wanderers, UEFA, Rugby Football Union etc.).

FIFA Master Partner, De Montfort University (Leicester, UK), confers Honorary Doctor of Arts on FIFA President

http://www.fifamaster.org/index.php?item=news&id=81

Major honour for Joseph S. Blatter: the De Montfort University in Leicester conferred the title of Honorary Doctor of Arts on the FIFA President on Wednesday, 9 November. This accolade is bestowed upon persons of intellectual, cultural and professional distinction, and for whom the award is a proper form of recognition by the university.

De Montfort University Pro Chancellor, Philip Smith, conferred the award of Honorary Doctor of Arts on the FIFA President during the annual graduation ceremony for students of the Department of Humanities. The citation lauded the FIFA President as the embodiment of the development of football across the world. According to the tribute, Mr Blatter “has travelled the world to sustain and consolidate the foundation of football associations in every continent. He is forthright, visionary, ethical and, above all, professional. It is these qualities which have driven the development of the sport to the international position it holds today.”

Blatter accepted the honorary doctorate “gratefully and on behalf of FIFA and the entire football family worldwide as they have placed their trust in me to lead the game as FIFA President.”

The citation also emphasised the FIFA President’s efforts to put football at the service of society as whole and throughout the world. “His conviction is that football can help to make a better world. This belief has inspired his work for the development of world football. He makes every effort to give responsibility to developing countries and to take them on board at all levels of decision-making.”

More than a decade ago while still General Secretary, but then especially after being elected FIFA President in 1998, Blatter also decided to give a particular emphasis to the links between FIFA, football and the academic world, stating: “We do not need only better players, referees or doctors. We need to increase the professional ability of directors, and their background in management, in law and in the humanities as well.”

Under his leadership, the Centre International d’Etudes du Sport (CIES) was established at the University of Neuchâtel in Switzerland. The centre was the ideal instrument to implement this policy, and De Montfort University’s International Centre for Sport History and Culture quickly became involved.

The partnership between De Montfort University and FIFA started in 2000, with the creation of a unique MA programme, the FIFA Master, offered jointly by De Montfort, Bocconi University in Milan and Neuchâtel University. Sponsored by FIFA and currently in its sixth year, the course is aimed at educating the future managers of world sport.

For FIFA’s centenary last year, Blatter appointed an international group of four historians, two of whom are from De Montfort, to write the history of the organisation. He gave the academics full access to the FIFA archives, promoting an innovative and successful form of collaboration between historians and a sporting organisation.

Nevertheless, five years of countless hours in the pool and on the road with my team, the McGill Triathlon Club, finally paid off as I was on my way to the beautiful island of Oahu this
